Three Years

Alexei Laptev hopes that marriage to Yulia will give his life the happiness he has been unable to find. Their relationship begins with unequal feelings and develops within a world of family obligations, money and uncertain expectations. Affection cannot simply be assumed because a decision has been made. Anton Chekhov follows the passage of time through conversations, domestic adjustments and changes in how people see one another. Laptev's connection to a merchant family makes questions of work and authority part of private life. The characters' understanding of themselves is tested by circumstances that refuse to follow the shape of their original hopes. The novella explores marriage, disappointment and the possibility of emotional change. Its attention to gradual shifts allows readers to consider how a relationship may develop without any single event explaining it completely, and how time can alter both what people want and what they are able to recognise in others.
