The Historical Nights’ Entertainment

A conspiracy, a sensational trial or the fall of a powerful figure can become a familiar historical fact while the people behind it remain distant. In these narratives, Rafael Sabatini returns to dramatic episodes of European history and reconstructs the choices that preceded their outcomes. Ambition, jealousy, fear and political necessity give public events an intimate human dimension. The collection draws on historical accounts while using the methods of a storyteller. Scenes, conversations and interpretations of motive connect the surviving evidence. These are literary reconstructions rather than a promise of undisputed documentary truth. Their interest lies in following uncertain decisions towards results that later generations already know.
