Ivanhoe

England, 1194. Wilfred of Ivanhoe returns from the Third Crusade to a country divided by the ambitions of Prince John and the rivalry between Saxon nobles and Norman rulers. Disinherited by his father, he enters the tournament at Ashby under a concealed identity. His hopes of reconciliation and marriage to Rowena soon become entangled with a much wider struggle for power. A wounded knight, a captive household and a besieged castle bring together Richard the Lionheart, the outlaw Locksley and Rebecca, whose courage challenges the prejudices surrounding her. Walter Scott sets the splendour of chivalry against violence and intolerance, asking what honour means when loyalty, faith and compassion point in different directions.
