A Legend of Montrose

Scotland, 1644. As Montrose gathers forces for Charles I, old clan grievances and private loyalties threaten to divide those who fight on the same side. Allan M’Aulay and the Earl of Menteith are both drawn to Annot Lyle, a young woman whose origins remain uncertain. Their rivalry develops amid a campaign shaped as much by inherited hatred as by political conviction. Alongside this troubled story moves Captain Dugald Dalgetty, an experienced mercenary whose concern for pay and professional advantage brings a dry, practical humour to the war. Walter Scott combines military adventure with a mystery of identity, examining the destructive force of jealousy and revenge in a society where a family’s past can determine the choices of the living.
