The Pirate

On the Shetland Islands, Mordaunt Mertoun has grown close to Minna and Brenda, the daughters of Magnus Troil. When he rescues a stranger from a shipwreck, the newcomer’s charm and mysterious past disturb the balance of their isolated community. Captain Cleveland brings the promise of adventure, but also connections that make trust increasingly dangerous. Set among the northern islands at the end of the seventeenth century, Walter Scott’s novel moves between stormy shores, island households and the world of seafaring outlaws. Norna’s strange authority and the secrets surrounding Mordaunt’s family deepen the uncertainty. The sea provides more than a setting: it carries strangers, wealth and violence into a society caught between inherited Norse traditions and changing Scottish influence.
