Collected Works in Four Volumes. Volume 4

The fourth volume contains Statesman, Laws, Epinomis, Letters and additional works and appendices from the Platonic tradition. Statesman investigates the art of government and the relationship between a ruler's knowledge and established rules. Laws offers an extended discussion of the city, education, property, courts and punishment. Epinomis continues the inquiry into knowledge and wisdom, while Letters brings philosophical questions into contact with political experience and personal relationships. Supplementary texts and epigrams broaden the picture of the Platonic legacy and its transmission. The volume closes the collection by examining how philosophical principles relate to legislation and the practical demands of communal life.
