About this audiobook
Dmitry Rudin arrives among people whose comfortable country life is enlivened by conversation and the promise of new ideas. His intelligence and eloquence quickly attract attention. He can give an inspiring shape to thoughts that others have struggled to express, and his presence changes how they understand their own possibilities.
Ivan Turgenev places this gift beside a more difficult question: can the speaker live according to the ideals he presents so convincingly? Rudin's relationships expose the distance between intellectual enthusiasm and the decisions that require personal commitment. Admiration becomes less secure when words must be translated into action and another person's feelings are involved.
The novel explores the appeal of conviction and the limits of eloquence without reducing its protagonist to a simple fraud. Its interest lies in a man whose insight can awaken others, even while his own capacity to act remains uncertain, and in the hopes people invest in those who seem able to explain their lives.
