About this audiobook

Dmitry Olenin leaves his familiar social world and travels to the Caucasus, hoping to find a more authentic way of living. Life in a Cossack village seems to offer the simplicity and freedom he feels are missing from his own experience. His attraction to Maryana gives this hope a personal focus, but the people around him do not exist merely to fulfil his ideal. Leo Tolstoy places Olenin's expectations beside the independence of those he encounters. Their work, loyalties and understanding of belonging reveal the distance between admiring a way of life and being able to enter it. The natural surroundings sharpen his awareness of himself without automatically resolving his uncertainty. The story explores the wish to escape habit, the limits of selflessness and the difficulty of loving without turning another person into a promise of personal renewal. Its tension grows from the encounter between an imagined freedom and a community with purposes of its own.
