About this audiobook
The arrival of a retired professor and his young wife unsettles the routines of a country estate. Vanya and his niece Sonya have devoted years to work that supports a life whose value they increasingly question. The visitors bring feelings and disagreements into view that the household has previously managed to leave unspoken.
Anton Chekhov allows ordinary conversation to reveal disappointed hopes, unequal commitments and the wish for affection. The doctor Astrov's presence adds another perspective on exhausted lives and the consequences of neglect. No single character can completely explain the others, and apparently modest events expose differences that have developed over many years.
The play explores work, responsibility and the difficulty of imagining a different future when familiar obligations remain. Its tension comes from the closeness of people who know one another well without necessarily understanding what the others need, and from the effort to find meaning within circumstances that offer few easy promises.
