Unlike society’s expectations, girls don’t become competitors, but find strong friendship. But when the rebellion of the workers who break the machines comes to the region, and her mysterious and poor teacher Louis Moore comes to Sherley, the lives of all the heroes are found in a nod of debt, pride, passion and social class prejudice. Bronte managed to go beyond the usual female novel: she created a powerful epic plate, where social realism and industrial rebellions are blended with deep psychology, and the image of Sherley became one of the first manifests of female independence in literature.
