The Hammermen

Vasily Yan turns to the lives of people whose labour sustains early Russian ironworking. Peasants and craftsmen are drawn into a demanding world of furnaces, workshops and obligations imposed by those who control their work. The skills needed to shape metal exist alongside a social order that gives workers little freedom over their own lives. The narrative places industrial activity within the relationships of owners, overseers and dependent labourers. Work is both a source of knowledge and a means of coercion, and the people who perform it cannot separate their craft from the conditions under which it is required. Historical change appears through practical tasks and unequal authority. The story explores the human cost of production and the dignity of skilled labour. Its historical perspective directs attention to the hands behind material achievement, asking how experience, endurance and the wish for freedom can survive within arrangements that treat people primarily as a resource.
