Fairy Tales

Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin turns the familiar world of fairy tales into a sharp portrait of human society. Animals debate justice, the powerful demand obedience, and the vulnerable try to survive through caution, ingenuity or patience. Beneath the fantastic situations lie recognisable relationships between rulers and subjects, dependence on the labour of others, fear of change and the habit of explaining away injustice. An apparently simple story gradually exposes contradictions its characters would rather ignore. The tales combine the rhythms of folk storytelling with irony, grotesque exaggeration and the language of official pronouncements. Their humour often has a bitter edge: prudence becomes paralysing fear, fine words conceal cruelty, and promises of kindness do little for those without protection. These short allegories reveal the range of the writer’s satire while asking lasting questions about conscience, dignity, work and personal responsibility.
