About this audiobook

A young writer becomes involved in the intertwined troubles of people whose hopes are vulnerable to money, influence and emotional dependence. Natasha's relationship with Alyosha puts her at odds with her family, while the interests of those with greater social power shape the choices apparently available to them. The suffering of a neglected child brings another kind of responsibility into the narrator's life. Fyodor Dostoyevsky follows the damage caused when affection and trust meet manipulation. Characters struggle to distinguish generosity from self-sacrifice and sincere attachment from the need to possess or control. Family conflicts are inseparable from the unequal circumstances in which different people must defend their dignity. The novel explores humiliation, compassion and the difficulty of helping without making another person's life an extension of one's own desires. Its emotional intensity comes from relationships in which love remains important but cannot, by itself, remove cruelty, dependency or the consequences of earlier choices.
