Woe from Wit

Alexander Chatsky returns to Moscow and enters a society whose familiar manners no longer seem easy to accept. His sharp observations disturb the comfortable assumptions of Famusov's household, while his feelings for Sophia complicate the confidence of his judgements. What begins as a return to familiar people develops into a conflict over conduct, reputation and the right to speak openly. Alexander Griboyedov gives the comedy its momentum through conversation, misunderstanding and the rapid circulation of opinion. Social position and accepted behaviour can matter more than the truth of an observation. Chatsky's intelligence does not protect him from emotional blindness or guarantee that those around him will listen. Written in verse, the play examines conformity, ambition and the uneasy place of an independent voice within a self-protecting community. Its comedy emerges from recognisable habits of admiration and gossip, and from the difficulty of separating a defence of principle from a wounded personal expectation.
