About this audiobook
"White Guard" of Mikhail Bulgakov is the writer's debut novel, one of the strongest, deepest and tragic works in the Russian literature of the 20th century. This is a large-scale historical chronicle in which the personal drama of the intelligent family develops on the background of the collapse of the Russian Empire, the civil war and the irresistible wind of history. The action of the novel takes place at the end of 1918 – early 1919 in the snowed, scared City (in which it is easily recognized by the author of Kiev). In the center of the story – the family of the Turbin: the older brother, the military doctor Alexey, the young junker Nikolka and their sister Elena. Their comfortable house with the cream ceilings, the old hours playing the horse, and the sounds of the piano seems to be the last flock of heat and the former, civilized life. However, the external world is constantly broken down: the power in the City is rapidly and bloodly changing – from the Hettman of the Skopadsky and the Petrovci to the coming Bolsheviks. Each of the heroes and their friends-officers must pass through the deadly danger, the betrayal of the loved ones, the collapse of the former ideals and make their main choice – how to preserve human dignity and honor when around the usual universe dies. Bulgakov managed to write a surprisingly honest, lyrical and at the same time epic novel. On his pages the horror of the arms, the panic on the streets and the cruel truth of the Brotherhood War are blended with deep biblical motives, the faith in the continuous value of the family focus and the hope that over the tortured land will ever again rule the world.
