A man enters an official's household disguised as a servant, pursuing a purpose connected with political opposition. His position gives him access to private conversations and habits normally hidden from outsiders. Yet the life he observes begins to complicate the expectations and convictions that brought him there.
Anton Chekhov develops the story through the narrator's changing relationship with the people around him.
